Carousel Horse

2024

Concrete, wheels, acrylic paint

During the summer of 2024, I cast a mold of an existing carousel horse on Staten Island to create this concrete sculpture. By distorting its form, I sought to produce a low-fidelity copy of the original—one that remained recognizable nonetheless. I added wheels to allow for its movement, serving as a gesture to "liberate" it from the circular dynamics of the carousel.

This work addresses the subjectivity of memory; my recollections of the accident are vague or altered—much like the borrowed form of the carousel horse itself—standing in contrast to the rigidity, formality, and weight conferred upon it by the concrete.
